Srikakulam Woman’s Murder Mystery Solved, Accused Arrested

Srikakulam: The mystery regarding the murder case of Kanakalatha Mahanti (22), who was murdered in Sompeta Mandal of Ramachandrapuram on February 16, has been uncovered. The hair follicles found near the body helped solve the case.

SP Venkataratnam handed over cash rewards to the police on Wednesday for solving the case in four days.

Revealing details regarding the case, the SP said that they investigated all the aspects in the case after Kanakalatha's mother Radhamani Mahanti registered a complaint at the police station.

According to the details, while Kanaka Latha walked every day to a well outside of the village for a bath, the police found out there is a wine shop nearby. Also, the post-mortem report stated the woman was strangled to death and a towel was collected as evidence at the crime scene.

Under the guidance of Kasibugga DSP Barla Prasada Rao, the officials began investigating the case and collected evidence. Shortly after the crime, a man named Tata Rao was witnessed to be moving around suspiciously and bore nail injury marks on his body which came under the police focus. Further, the police informed that he holds a criminal record.

After the police team found a resemblance with the hair follicles found near the body to Tata Rao's hair, they took him into custody and conducted an interrogation. Tata Rao eventually confessed to the crime and revealed that he had been looking for an opportunity after he noticed the young woman daily. On finding her alone, Tata Rao told the police that he made a move but as she got afraid, he strangled her to death with a towel. He was the first one to inform the villagers about the incident. The police officials presented the accused before the court on Wednesday.
