Ananthapuram: Mohammad Rafi was all set to marry a girl on Thursday as decided. When the marriage was scheduled to take place, the groom escaped from the venue. The incident took place on Thursday at Kadiri. According to the police, Mohammad Rafi who runs a pan shop and was supposed to get married to a girl around 11:30 am at Titanic function hall in Kadiri. While everyone was busy in the marriage, the bride's parents learned that Rafi was missing.

A day before the marriage, Rafi took 10 Tolas gold as dowry but argued with the girl's family members saying it was not pure gold. When the village elders intervened in the matter, they got convinced. The victim's family members allege that approximately Rs 1 lakh was spent for the wedding ceremony and Rs 3 lakh for gold. "They cheated us by leaving the function hall abruptly. We thought he was a good boy but we are beginning to realise that he was a liar," they said.

The accused left the wedding when another family offered him Rs 50,000 extra, it is learned. In support of victim, the locals of Nijamvali protested in front of the police station and demanded justice for the girl. A case was filed against the accused and the probe is underway, CI Gorantla Madhav said.
