Karnataka: A Bengaluru mechanic was defrauded to the tune of 1 lakh after he received a call from a fraudster. The conman told the victim that he bagged prize money of Rs 35 lakh in the lucky draw of Kaun Banega Crorepati and asked him to deposit some charges in multiple bank accounts.

The victim, Ismail Sharief, who received the call on January 5, first ignored the call, but as the fraudster called him repeatedly to share his account details, he believed him and sent his bank details. The accused then called him up and asked him to deposit Rs 25,000 as bank charges.

The bigger pot at the end of the rainbow of Rs 35 lakh lured the victim into transferring the amount without much hesitation.

Later, Ismail received another call, asking him to send Rs 35,000 more, for the charges of another bank. The fraudster persisted and forced Ismail to pay the money to different bank accounts in the state. Around four people called Ratan Das, Rahul Kumar, Dev Sharma and Karthik sent their account numbers to him to deposit the money.

The fraudsters did not leave a single penny from him. After Ismail having deposited over Rs 1.30 lakh as tax and bank charges, he called the fraudsters and asked them to return his money as he had nothing left. He also said that he was not interested in any lucky draw.

The conmen told him to borrow Rs 100 from one of his friends and then buy poison to kill himself and his family.

Ismail then approached the cyber crime division of the police and lodged a complaint against the fraudsters.
