Boost To Polavaram: Centre Approves Revised Estimates

New Delhi: In a significant move, the Central Hydro Power Department has approved the revised estimates of Rs 55,548.87 crore towards Polavaram project construction. These estimates were worked out based on the 2017-18 prices.

The announcement was made by Minister for State for Jal Shakti, Rattan Lal Kataria, in response to a question raised by YSRCP MP V Vijayasai Reddy in Rajya Sabha. The decision and ratification is a follow-up to the February 11 meeting in which the then TDP government had submitted revised estimates to the Union government vis-a-vis Polavaram project construction.

Kataria mentioned that the Centre had examined the State government proposal with regard to estimates and approved the same. Of the Rs 55,548.37 crore, the cost to be incurred for Polavaram right canal will be Rs 4,318.97 crore, Rs 4,202.69 crore for the left canal, Rs 9,734.34 crore for head works, Rs 4,124.64 for powerhouse works and Rs 33,168.23 crore for land acquisition and rehabilitation works. The proposal has now been approved.

Starting from April 2014 for various works pertaining to the project, based on the Water Resources Ministry's recommendations, the Centre has so far released Rs 6,764.16 crore to the Polavaram project. The Centre had requested for the audit reports twice before March 31, 2014, for the release of remaining funds. The subsequent funds would be released only after the submission of the audit reports. The Minister pointed out that the Union government had not received any proposal requesting for the GST exemption for Polavaram project from the State government so far.
