Three-Member Committee To Probe Kidney Racket Case In Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam: A day after the case of an alleged illegal organ transplantation came to light in Shraddha Hospital, District Collector K Bhaskar on Friday appointed a three-member committee to investigate the kidney racket case.

Two doctors were arrested on May 8 for their alleged involvement in an organ transplant racket, which took place a year ago. The doctors, M Manjunath (34), a Ayurvedic doctor from Bengaluru, and D Prabhakar (35) were arrested on the charges of illegal transplantation of kidney.

The incident came to light after the complainant, who is an organ donor approached the police claiming that he was not paid the promised money.

Mr Bhaskar informed that the three-member committee comprising the District Medical & Health Officer, District Co-Ordinator of Hospital Services (DCHS) and the Superintendent of King George Hospital (KGH) would look into all the transplant cases done by the hospital and the other hospitals in Visakhapatnam which had been performing organ transplants.

The city police are continuing the investigation in the kidney racket case. On Friday, police teams reportedly checked the records of the transplantations and a few other surgeries in the hospital. The police are also following up leads regarding two other accused members of the gang who are reportedly present in Bangalore.
