Boat Capsize in Godavari: School Blamed For Death of 6 Minors

Rescue operations underway at Godavari river - Sakshi Post

Last week's boat capsize story took a new turn when a NGO has approached State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) demanding action against Pasuvullanka high school in Polavaram mandal in East Godavari. The NGO, Balala Hakkula Sangham said that the death of six minors in boat accident could have been averted if the school had not taken the students to participate in a government programme on a holiday.

It is learnt that the school authorities has taken the students to Vanam Manam programme last Saturday when the accident occurred. Though it was second Saturday and holiday for the students, the school authorities took them to the programme under the instructions of the state government officials.

SHRC has accepted the petition by NGO and has instructed the AP Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report on this matter by September 24, 2018.

The boat accident occurred on Godavari river near Pasuvullanka. It is reported that the boat was transporting 40 people on board. It hit the under-construction bridge's pillar and capsized. Around 10 people were feared dead. The rescue operations for the missing persons were still on at the accident site.
