Tirupati: A Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader bound for Hyderabad by a private airlines flight was detained at the Renigunta on Saturday for carrying 20 bullets, an airport official said.

The TDP party leader, Kasibhatla Sainath Sarma from Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh was handed over to police by the airport authorities as the bullets were detected during scanning, the official said.

After preliminary inquiry, the passenger was found to have a valid gun licence, police said. The TDP leader, Kasibhatla Sainath Sarma was a close aide of Kadapa TDP leader Puttha Narasimha Reddy and was a Single Window Chairman in Kamalapuram. It is learnt that the even thought the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was in place , he had kept the gun with him instead of depositing the gun with the police.

The police have examined the documents pertaining to gun and have learnt that the license expires on May 3. However the police are examining as to why he had kept the gun with himself when it was supposed to deposited in the Kamlapuram Police station at the time when the MCC had come into force.
