10-Hour Long Rare Larynx Surgery Carried Out Successfully At NIMS

Hyderabad: A 35-year-old woman got a new lease of life on Monday after the doctors at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) carried out a rare larynx surgery. The operation lasted for 10 hours. Latha hailing from Nizamabad was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in 2011. The ailment affected her oral cavity and the food pipe, making it difficult for her to eat or talk. Though she was given four sittings of radiation the ailment resurrected in 2015.

Dr Bheerapppa Nagari, surgical gastroentroloigist at NIMS said, "The surgical intervention was required as the larynx and food pipe had been damaged. After removing these diseased parts, they had to be replaced and tissues from the colon or large intestine were taken. The food pipe was recreated with these tissues."
