Villagers Pitch In To Save Telangana Man From Death Row In UAE

Hyderabad: The villagers of Mendora in Nizamabad district are crowd funding to save a man hailing from their village from death penalty in UAE. Makuri Shankar (48) left for UAE for a better living in 2005. But in 2009, he was convicted on murder charges of a fellow Indian, who hails from Rajasthan. Shankar has been jailed in Fujairah.

But Shankar, who worked as a supervisor has denied the charges saying that he was in his room when the man fell off the sixth floor of an under-construction building.

“Shankar was in his room at that time and is in no way responsible for the man's death. The police registered a murder case against Shankar and jailed him," said a local politician trying to help Shankar.

As per UAE norms, Shankar has to pay 'blood money' if he is to be acquitted. Blood money is to be paid when someone is found liable for causing someone's death and is also implied for damage caused to a person's body.

The family of the deceased claimed Rs20 lakh as blood money but later settled for Rs6.5 lakh as Shankar comes from a poor background.

“The case came up once before a higher court on Tuesday and Shankar was given a final chance of settling the matter,” reported the TOI.

Each household in the village irrespective of caste or religion is contributing their mite for the release of the man.
