Tollywood in 2016: Mighty Bite dust, Minnows Rule The Roost

Only 10 per cent of the 255 films released in 2016 could be declared as hits. Some big names tasted failures this year, while it's the minnows who carried the day for Tollywood.
Most of the hits have been films with upcoming heroes and made with low budget. Heroes like Sharwanand, Nani and Nikhil did exceedingly well compared to big names.
As many as 172 straight films and 83 dubbing films were released in 2016.
Among the big films like Dictator (Balakrishna), Soggade Chinni Nayana, Oopiri (Nagarjuna) Sardar Gabbar Singh (Pawan Kalyan), Brahmotsavam (Mahesh Babu), Sarrainodu (Allu Arjun) Janatha Garage and Nannaku Prematho (NTR), only Soggade Chinni Nayana and Janatha Garage managed to become hits.
Nithiin's A Aa, which was directed by Trivikram Srinivas, too was a bit. Sarrainodu of Allu Arjun too was declared a commercial success.
But the real heroes this year were: Kshanam (thriller), Pelli Choopulu (rom com), Nenu Sailaja (Ram's romantic genre film), Express Raja (Sharwanand), Guntur Talkies (Adult Comedy), Supreme (Sai Dharam Tej), Krishna Gadi Veera Prema Gatha and Gentleman (Nani's rom com and thriller). These films did very well.
There were as many as 60 remakes this year. Of them, only Premam of Naga Chaitanya did decently well. Nikhil's Ekkadiki Pothavu Chinnavada too can be called a hit.
Among the 83 dubbing movies, only one film 'Bichagadu' with Vijay Antony in the lead role, went on to become a hit.
