TRS Bats For 12% Muslim Reservation After Centre’s Quota Bill

New Delhi: After having sprung a surprise 10% reservation for economically weaker sections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre is making quick strides, Union Minister for Social Justice Thavar Chand Gehlot introduced the bill in Lok Sabha. By way of 124th Constitutional amendment, the People's House would have to pass the bill with a two-thirds majority. The bill is expected to be passed smoothly in the Lok Sabha but it is the Rajya Sabha where the government will be posed with problems due to a lack of majority. Several Opposition parties may demand amendments to the bill.

Meanwhile, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) directed the Telangana Rastra Samithi MPs on the strategy that is to be followed at the time of the debate on the bill. He instructed the TRS MPs to urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi for passage of the 12% Muslim reservation bill, which was adopted by the Telangana Assembly in April, 2017. A reservation of 12% for Muslims and 10% for the Scheduled Tribes (STs) is being demanded by the TRS.
