Nagarjuna Sagar: A Congress Stronghold Held By Heavyweight Jana Reddy

Jana Reddy - Sakshi Post

Nagarjuna Sagar assembly constituency is one of the 12 assembly seats in Nalgonda district and falls under the Nalgonda Lok Sabha seat. In the 2014 elections Congress heavyweight, and Leader of Opposition in the recently dissolved House, K. Jana Reddy retained his Nagarjuna Sagar constituency, defeating the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) candidate, Nomula Narsimaiah, by well over 16,000 votes. In fact, the 2009 election saw a closer fight between Jana Reddy and T. Chinappa Reddy of the TDP in which the former won by a relatively reduced margin of over 6,000 votes. This time around the TRS has renominated Nomula Narsimaiah, who to put it mildly is not the hottest of favourites here.

Jana Reddy tried to impress on the Congress party high command to give the Nagarjuna Sagar ticket to his son, Raghuveer Reddy and hoped to shift to Miryalguda himself, where he fancied he stood a fair chance. The Congress high command however, was not impressed and stuck to the one ticket per family rule, dashing Jana Reddy's hopes.

The fact however, remains that, should the Mahakutami or Grand Alliance of the Congress come power, Jana Reddy's name would be high in the list of probables for the chief minister's post, having ruffled fewer feathers than any of the other leaders. He also remains the tallest Congress leader from Telangana.
