Peddapally: A sub-inspector working with Dharmaram police station in Peddapally district has proved that he belonged to the old school of policing - he demonstrated all his demonic attitude which used to be the patented trademark of the police department in the old days.

The SI who was the patrolling called a married woman a 'case' a colloquial reference to prostitute when she was in her field along with three small daughters while her husband was looking after water supply to their paddy crop off the Dharmaram main road. All the crime the woman committed - in the eyes of the SI - was she came out at night, it was around 9pm though.

The family of this small farmer Devendar, who also runs an auto, came to his field and took along with him his wife and children just like that. Farmers generally visit their fields at night to irrigate their crops as power is available only at that time. While he was on the job, wife Shyamala, daughters - Aparna, Sampoorna and Blessy - waiting in the auto. Then comes this SI Haribabu and with all his police 'julum' asks what was she doing there. But, he wouldn't wait to hear her answer and calls her a 'case', meaning a prostitute, and asks her "Are you running the business here?" without any human consideration not to speak such vulgar words in front of three small girls.

Infuriated by the SI's unreasonable behavior, Mahendar questioned him why he is doing this them? And the fuedalistic police officer got angry beyond control and thrashed the man black and blue there itself for sometime and brought all the family to the station. The SI was joined by another SI Srinivas who together tortured the man and when the woman was trying to stop them, she was also thrashed - all in front of their small daughters who were crying in scare.

The thrashing went on until a few villagers came to know about the 'third degree' treatment of the couple by the SIs and the entire village gathered at the police station demanding an action against the erring police officials.

On Sunday, people of the village cutting across party affiliations staged a rasta roko at Bompally and demanded action against the SIs. However, the SIs registered cases against Mahendar and Shyamala and are about arrest them as per the legal procedure on Monday.

The couple belongs to Dalit community and this incident shows how the downtrodden sections of society in Telangana are treated by the government mechanism.
