Hyderabad: Even as the two state-run hospitals washed their hands off the death saga of L. Prakash, the case took a new turn on Wednesday as his medical records showed that Osmania General Hospital (OGH) doctors cited the unavailability of ventilator support.

It may be recalled that after being shuttled between OGH and Gandhi Hospital Prakash succumbed to injuries on Monday en route to Gandhi Hospital as OGH’s neurosurgery ward did not have ventilator.

The records establish that there was clear hospital negligence in denying ventilator support to my brother Prakash by OGH authorities in spite of the fact that they had plenty of ventilators at their disposal as was claimed by the hospital officials

The report signed by a doctor at OGH on Sunday read as “Patient not willing for admission due to non availability of beds and ventilator support.”

“The records establish that there was clear hospital negligence in denying ventilator support to my brother Prakash by OGH authorities in spite of the fact that they had plenty of ventilators at their disposal as was claimed by the hospital officials,” said L Balakishan, a cousin of the deceased.

In fact the case report was also confirmed by Gandhi Hospital when Prakash was finally brought back to the hospital in a comatose state.

The case report written by Gandhi Hospital doctor read as, “Case was brought from OGH due to non-availability of ventilator support. Patient was brought to Gandhi hospital at 10.40pm. Pulse and heart not reachable.”

Earlier, OGH superintendent Dr GVS Murthy said that the hospital had 90 ventilators.
“The staff said they did not ask the patient to leave the hospital. There is no shortage of beds or ventilators,” he added.

The incident drew flak from other sections as well as AAP Telangana State co-convener Prof PLVishweshwar Rao blamed Gandhi Hospital officials for not informing trauma patients in advance that their CT scan machine was down for four day and also not conducting Prakash’s autopsy .

However, Gandhi hospital superintendent Dr J Venkateshwar Reddy told the protesting family members that they did not start the basic treatment on Prakash as he was `hemodynamically stable’.

“We could not conduct his post-mortem too as there was a huge mob outside the hospital,” he said, adding that they had initiated an inquiry to identify the lapses.
