Old City Woman Complains Against Omani Husband Over WhatsApp Talaq 

Hyderabad: A 31 year-old woman of Old City who got married to a 72 year-old Omani national in 2008 lodged a complaint with the police on Monday against her husband who is stated to have sent her a Talaq on WhatsApp.

The tradition of divorcing a wife by pronouncing Talaq three times has been abolished by the Indian government recently and it's an offence punishable with jail term and penalty. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill was approved by the Union Cabinet recently and it will be tabled in both houses of Parliament this week for enactment into a law.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 will be tabled in the Lok Sabha on December 28, 2017 and Ravi Shankar Prasad will introduce the Bill to “protect the rights of married Muslim women” and stop the practice of instant triple talaq.

Ghousiya Begum complained that her husband Hameed was not responding to her phone calls for the last three months after sending a Talaq message on WhatsApp. Hameed offered to pay her Rs10 lakh under permanent maintenance. Amjed Ullah Khan of MBT wrote to the Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj to take action against Hameed.
