Top 10 Indian Blue Flag Beaches: On September 22, 2021, two additional beaches, Kovalam beach in Tamil Nadu and Eden beach in Puducherry, were given the ‘Blue Flag' certification. The total number of Blue Flag-certified beaches in India has now reached ten, with eight beaches receiving the certification on October 6, 2020. These eight beaches have also received re-certification.

What Is Blue Flag Certification?

The Foundation for Environmental Education in Denmark awards the Blue Flag certification, which is a worldwide eco-level label (FEE). At all times, FEE Denmark monitors and audits for strict adherence to the 33 requirements. A beach, marina, or sustainable boating tourism operator receives the certification. It functions as an environmental label. It is given out on an annual basis.

What Is The Blue Flag Programme?

The Blue Flag programme began in France in 1985 and expanded to other parts of the world in 2001. Through four key areas: environmental management, water quality, environmental education, and safety, the programme acknowledges and supports sustainable development throughout freshwater and marine water bodies.

Blue Flag Beaches In India In 2020

The Blue Flag certification will be granted to eight beaches in India in 2020. It was a remarkable achievement because no country has ever received the Blue Flag for eight beaches in a single attempt. These are the eight beaches:

(i) Kappad (Kerala)

(ii) Shivrajpur (Gujarat)

(iii) Ghoghla (Diu)

(iv) Padubidri (Karnataka)

(v) Rushikonda (Andhra Pradesh)

(vi) Golden (Odisha)

(vii) Radhanagar (Andaman & Nicobar Islands)

(viii) Kasarkod (Karnataka)

Blue Flag Beaches In India By 2021

Two beaches in India were awarded the Blue Flag certification in 2021. These are the two beaches:

(ix) Kovalam beach in Tamil Nadu

(x) Eden beach in Puducherry
