TRS Corporators Gadwal Vijayalakshmi Elected GHMC Mayor, Mothe Srilatha Reddy Is Deputy Mayor

HYDERABAD: The election for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts in the new Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Council  was held at 12:30 pm on Thursday  and was completed admist much fanfare.

Gadwal Vijayalaksmi TRS corporator from Banjara Hills and daughter of TRS Party senior leader, Rajya Sabha Member K Keshava Rao was declared the 17th Mayor of Hyderabad, while Tarnaka TRS corporator while Mothe Srilatha Reddy,  the TRS Corporator  from Taranaka was selected as the Deputy Mayor. 

While Vijayalakshmi defeated BJP’s nominee RK Puram corporator Radha Reddy, Srilatha Reddy,  won over BJP’s  candidate Shankar Yadav.

GHMC had made elaborate arrangements for conducting the oath ceremony and mayoral elections. All members have been asked to follow Covid-19 protocol. A total of 193 electors, including 149 ward members and 44 ex-officio members elected the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

All the 150 newly elected councillors of the city Corporation were sworn in at the Council hall in four languages - Telugu, English, Hindi and Urdu.

Presiding Officer Swetha Mohanthy conducting the proceedings while Election Observer Sandeep Kumar Sultania monitored the proceedings.

The winners were presented the certificates by the Presiding Officer and the proceedings came to an end.

Following the appeal from Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party, the oath taking ceremony was conducted as a group and not for individual candidates. The same appeal was supported by MIM and BJP parties.
