On Monday, BS Yediyurappa resigned from the position of the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Basavaraj Bommai, a Lingayat MLA and Karnataka Home Minister, has been named the new Chief Minister of the state by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On Wednesday, he will take the oath at the Rajbhavan at 3:20 p.m.

The soon-to-be-appointed CM began his political career as a member of the Janata Dal. He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council from the Dharwad constituency in the years 1998 and 2004. In 2008, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after leaving the Janata Dal (United).

  1. He was born on 28 January 1960.

  2. Basavaraj Bommai is the 26th Chief Minister of Karnataka. This is the second time that a father-son successorship has taken place.

  3. JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda and H D Kumaraswamy are the first father-son combo to have served as chief minister.

  4. He started his political career with Janata Dal. He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council from the Dharwad constituency in the years 1998 and 2004.

  5. Between 1988 and 1989, his father, S R Bommai, a Janata Party leader, served as the state's 11th chief minister for a year.

  6. In 2008, Basavaraj Bommai joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after leaving the Janata Dal (United).

  7. He was earlier the Minister of State Home Affairs Parliamentary Affairs and Legislature of Karnataka.

  8. The new Chief Minister of the state has finished his mechanical engineering from the BV Bhoomareddy College of Engineering and Technical Education, Hubballi.
