Kartarpur Sahib Corridor Opens to Pilgrims After 20 Months, Know More

Kartarpur Sahib Corridor is open for Holy Darshan on Wednesday (November 17) after 20 months. It is one of the most important shrines of Sikhs. The corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab's Gurdaspur district.

India and Pakistan have agreed to allow only fully vaccinated individuals to Kartarpur Sahib Corridor. The pilgrims should carry a negative RT-PCR report and Covid-19 vaccination certificates. 

In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that it had decided to resume operations on the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor from November 17, keeping in view the improved Covid-19 situation.

Covid Rules For Pilgrims:

Need to undergo regular temperature checks
Proper sanitization
Compulsory face mask
Observing social distancing
Should carry negative RT PCR report, not older than 72 hours prior to arrival
COVID-19 vaccination certificates

Know about Kartarpur Sahib Corridor:

Kartarpur is a town located in Shakargarh, Narowal district in Punjab, Pakistan. It is located on the right bank of the river, Ravi. Guru Nanak, the first guru of Sikhism founded Kartarpur in 1504 AD. The meaning of Kartarpur means "city of Creator or God".

After his travels for about 20 years, Guru Nanak settled in Kartarpur along with his family. After his death in 1539, the Gurudwara Kartarpur Sahib was built and it is considered as second holiest site for the Sikh religion.

During the 1947 Partition of India, the region got divided across India and Pakistan. Kartarpur went into Pakistan.  

On November 22, 2018, the government of India has passed a resolution to celebrate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. 

On 9 November 2019, Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated the opening of a cross-border Kartarpur Corridor allowing Indian Sikhs to visit Pakistan without a visa.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh, his wife Gursharan Kaur, the then Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri were part of the first group to visit the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan in November 2019 using the corridor.
