South Korean Touch to Cycling Track on Hyderabad's ORR

Hyderabad: On the Outer Ring Road, a 21-kilometre cycling lane proposed by the Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL) is likely to double as an environmental conservation measure, shielding bikers from the sun and traffic while also allowing the government to produce sustainable energy.

This will be similar to a facility in South Korea, about which Norwegian environmentalist and president of the Green Belt and Road Institute, Erik Solheim, tweeted a video, and after which Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao suggested that the idea be replicated on the ORR in Hyderabad as well.

Solheim shared a video of the South Korean installation, which features solar panels amid a roadway with a bike lane beneath it. This, he argued, would shelter bicycles from the sun while also isolating them from traffic, with the bonus of the country's being able to produce sustainable energy.

Following that, Rama Rao tagged Special Chief Secretary for Urban Development Arvind Kumar in a tweet and requested he replicate it on the ORR.

Several others, including Santhana Selvan, Hyderabad's Bicycle Mayor, have praised the Minister's initiative.

That's not everything. In response to the same tweet, the Minister stated that Hyderabad was already India's best city. This was in response to a tweet from Venky Sai, who suggested that KTR's handling of the situation may make Hyderabad the best city in India. He said, "You are truly a role model for other states."

In response, the Minister stated that we were already India's best city.

"Check out Mercer's rankings on the livability index for Indian cities from 2015-20. For five years in a row, Hyderabad has been rated as the best among Indian cities," he noted.
