An Anti LGBTQ+ Song Blocks BTS' Jimin To Reach Billboard No. 1
The recent single "Angel Pt. 1" by BTS singer Jimin disappeared from the Billboard charts nearly as quickly as it came, but it has returned in an outstanding way. Sadly, a new homophobic single that received even higher sales numbers has prevented him from reaching No. 1.
In an effort to build on the success of "Angel Pt. 1," a new version of the song called "Angel Pt. 2" was released. Along with a new name, the updated remix also featured pop singer Charlie Puth in place of rappers NLE Choppa and Kodak Black. Muni Long, Jvke, and Jimin each contribute a song in both of its versions.
Rap Digital Song Sales, R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales, and other Billboard charts all saw "Angel Pt. 1" make its No. 1 debut. Jimin and the others nearly missed regaining the top spot with the re-release. In each of these rankings, "Angel Pt. 2" came in second place, but was ultimately overtaken by the recent release that encourages homophobia.
The song "Reclaim The Rainbow" by Bryson Gray, Jimmy Levy, and Shemeka Michelle is responsible for Jimin's inability to reach No. 1 again. Even though exact sales data weren't released at the time of publication, this controversial song tops the R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap digital song sales charts upon its release.
The song aims to present Pride celebrations and the acceptance of the LGBTQ community in a negative light, and it is accompanied by a low-budget music video. It makes many references to religion as well as a number of famous personalities and politicians in an effort to convey a point.
Despite the setback, "Angel Pt. 1" has recovered its popularity and returned to the top 10 on a number of Billboard sales-only charts. Due to its impressive sales results, it has also been able to return to the coveted Hot 100, where it presently ranks No. 95 after originally peaking at No. 65.
