Chennai Super Kings failed to grab the top spot in the IPL points table after they were defeated by Delhi Daredevils by 34 runs at the Firoz Shah Kotla Ground on Friday.

After Delhi's top order failed, Vijay Shankar (36* off 29) and Harshal Patel (36* off 16) scripted Daredevils' recovery, helping the hosts reach 162 for five with an unbeaten 65-run stand off 32 balls. They posted a healthy 162/5 after being put in to bat.

Delhi's bowling unit was impressive. Amit Mishra (2/20) and Sandeep Lamichhane (1/21) starred as they restricted CSK to 128 for six. All-rounder Patel chipped in with the ball as well by taking the prized wicket of Ambati Rayudu (50 off 29).

It was Daredevils' fourth win of the season in 13 games. The already eliminated team has one more game to play against Mumbai Indians on Sunday. The unexpected loss was CSK's fifth in 13 matches and they remain second on the points table.

The visitors were off to a decent 46-run start by Ambati Rayudu and Shane Watson(14) but leg-spinner Amit Mishra got the breakthrough with the wicket of the veteran Australian.

Rayudu continued his good form and struck yet another half-century off 28 balls. But he was removed by Harshal Patel in the very next ball.

Next was skipper MS Dhoni's turn. He started in his customary style by rotating the strike with Raina, who didn't last long, perishing to Nepal leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane caught by Shankar at deep mid-wicket.

Later, when Trent Boult was brought back he got dangerman Dhoni's wicket.

With two overs remaining and the asking rate mounting, Jadeja and new man Dwayne Bravo (1) could do little as Boult once again struck in the final over with the wicket of the West Indian to restrict the visitors to 128/6.
