Subhas Chandra Bose was born on 23 January 1897 in Cuttack which was a part of Calcutta. He was the ninth of fourteen children of Bose parents Prabhavati Dutt and Janakinath Bose. An exceptionally good student, Swami Vivekananda's writings inspired him to achieve something significant in his life.
Bose pursued his higher studies in Calcutta Presidency College, but didn't like the teachings of the British faculty. With the help of the students, Bose had conducted some protests and made the faculty to seek an apology from the students. The College Principal who learnt about the dharnas him from the college. Later on, he joined Scottish Church College and completed his military training. Bose graduated from Calcutta University at the age of 22 years.
Bose's father wanted to see his son shine in good position in Indian civil services. In 1939, he met Mahatma Gandhi but their ideals or means to attain the same end, were different. Bose met Chittaranjan Das, the renowned freedom fighter in Calcutta. Bose went through a jail term of six months.
Bose left India as soon as he stepped out from Jail in 1940. He headed to Germany in 1941. But, Bose got married in the year 1937. How and when the marriage did the marriage take place? After the completion of his graduation, Bose left to Germany for Indian civil services studies. Emily was from a common family who completed her schooling.Bose met Emily through a common friend.
Emily used to be fond of writing and reading. At the time, Bose was working on books and he thought she would help with him with her skills. Both of them started working together and their friendship brewed into love. They got secretly married as per Hindu traditions in 1937. None of them were presented to their marriage even relative or friends that much secretly it happened. There was no proof for their marriage. Bose came back to India after his Indian Civil Service but Emily didn't come to India in her lifetime. He used meet Emily while he was on a trip to Germany. They were blessed with a baby girl in 1942 and they have named her Haritha Bose.
Bose was transferred to a Japanese submarine from which he disembarked in Japanese-held Sumatra in May 1943. His wife raised her daughter by working as a stenographer and their daughter Haritha spoke about her mother saying she used to be very careful and never ever spoke anything about her father or her relationship with him.
Bose died in 1948 at the age of 48. After he expired, in 1993, the Emily family had received 106 letters from delivery. Those were not usual letters but love stories written by Subhash Chandra Bose to Emily, in which he expressed his love for his country and for Emily.
