National Festival Status For Medaram Jatara Likely

Former Union minister and veteran BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya mentioned that the central government was in favour of declaring Asia's biggest tribal fair Sammakka Saralamma Jatara or Medaram Jatara as a National Festival.

It may be recalled that Telangana state has been seeking the National Festival status for the Medaram Jatara which is being held for four days from January 31 in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district. The festival will see largest congregation of tribal people from agency areas of Eturu Nagaram, Bhadrachalam as well as two neighbouring states of Karnataka and Maharastra.

Dattatreya informed that the Union tribal affairs minister Jual Oram, National Commission for Scheduled Tribes chairman Nand Kumar and some other union ministers would attend the festival. The veteran BJP leader said in all likelihood Jual Oram might announce the central government's decision to give National Festival status to Medaram Jatara during the visit.
