Male Breasts Can Be Treated Safely: Doctors

Hyderabad:  “Gynecomastia”, the enlarged breasts in men, informally known as “man boobs”, has become a common condition in men and boys during puberty, according to a study. Doctors say, in this case, the male breast tissue swells due to reduced male hormones (testosterone) or increased female hormones (estrogen).

Dr. Venkata Ramana - a senior surgeon at Contour’s Plastic Surgery Centre, Banjara Hills in Hyderabad, says in recent times, many males are coming with the cases of enlarged breasts. He said it has become a common condition in males and in most cases, gynecomastia is not a serious problem.

Speaking to reporters at the hospital, Dr. Venkata Ramana said Gynecomastia is caused by the imbalance of male and female hormones in male body and the symptoms are breast tissue swelling, tenderness and some men and boys may also experience pain in their breasts. Men, suffering from this problem, which is also psychologically difficult to cope with, also face decline in self-confidence and causing embarrassment.

It can be overcome by the Lipoplasty with the help of ultrasound and the costing for the surgery ranges from Rs.40,000 to Rs.50,000 depending on the sizes of the breasts. There will be no side effects by the treatment.

He said 10 percent of the males are suffering from this problem which affects self-esteem as well as other areas of emotional health in adolescent boys. The doctor said enlarged breasts will be restored to normalcy and the treatment for the problem in a vast majority of cases is very simple.
