Hyderabad School Charges Rs 60,000 As ‘Pocket Money’

Hyderabad: Parents staged a protest after a Hyderabad school charged exorbitant amount in the name of "pocket money". Parents said Indus International School is collecting from Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 for the students who are boarders, while Rs 10,000 is being charged for day scholars. The norm is also applicable to primary level students. The amounts are being collected as pocket money and imprest.

We are paying transport, meals and tuition fees then why do kids need pocket money?

India-wide Parents Association and Hyderabad School Parents Association strongly objected to this claiming that schools are minting money under the guise of pocket money and other activities. A parent questioned as to why the children need pocket money?

"We are paying transport, meals and tuition fees then why do kids need pocket money?" said a parent.

However, Indus School Principal C.P. Joseph justified their action stating that the amount is not a recurring expenditure. It is being charged for extra-curricular activities like paragliding, external exams or purchasing sports gear.
