Gujarati Kichdi Cooks Up Controversy on Twitter

South Indians call it Pongal, Gujaratis call it kichdi. Made of rice and lentils, kichdi is a wholesome food which not only gives you protein but keeps your bowel movements in check too. A must-have winter delicacy, this Indian rice dish is a favorite for those who love bland food.
There were reports on Wednesday that the traditional Indian dish will be made the national food of the nation and promoted as brand India food at the World Good India 2017. Celebrity Chef Sanjeev Kapoor who's the event's brand ambassador was to cook 800-kg kichdi to create a world record. The cooked food was to be distributed to the orphans. Not a bad idea. But there's a hitch. Union Cabinet Minister of Food Processing Harsmirat Kaur Badal called the dish a representative of Indian cuisine as people from all economic strata of society enjoy it. Within minutes, there were tweets saying nobody even heard of Kichdi.

The only #Khichdi i liked through all these years. pic.twitter.com/ZxYaFYiDSl — Rishika (@aadiivaasii) November 1, 2017 Can't understand why people are rubbishing #Khichdi and bringing politics into it. It's a comfort food that made well can be very tasty. — Chitra Narayanan (@ndcnn) November 1, 2017 As India drops in Hunger Ratings under BJP, their response is making #Khichdi national dish! This is culinary hegemony! What abt gongura? — Madhuri Danthala (@Madhuism_) November 1, 2017 The only time I was admitted in a hospital was when I was 7. And I was fed khichdi. Godawful stuff. — Madhu Menon (@madmanweb) November 1, 2017 And if you don't like #Khichdi or don't eat it, I have the right to question your patriotism. Maybe, beat you if you don't eat & praise it. https://t.co/nnozUD4MsU — Nakuul Mehta (@NakuulMehta) November 1, 2017 I hate #Khichdi. Worst choice for national dish (why do we even need one?). The only time one shd eat it is when you're ill. — Zakka Jacob (@Zakka_Jacob) November 1, 2017 This is the best decision imho.Khichdi has good amount of carbs, adequate amount of protein and fats. Even the show was better than sarabhai — Chirag Barjatya (@chiragbarjatyaa) November 1, 2017 Enough Khichdi cooked up on a fictitious 'National Dish’. It has only been put for a record entry in #WorldFoodIndia. — Harsimrat Kaur Badal (@HarsimratBadal_) November 1, 2017 #WorldFoodIndia will proudly showcase India’s culinary diversity…looks like today has been a slow news day! :) — Harsimrat Kaur Badal (@HarsimratBadal_) November 1, 2017
Thus ended the speculation of Kichdi being made the National dish of India.
