Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has endeared himself to the people of the state with his decisions over the past one week. He issued orders granting general consent to the CBI so that it could conduct its investigations in the state freely. If anything, YS Jagan has been a victim of the CBI’s functioning which was politicised in his case. Congress leaders, who for their own selfish interests, blindly toed the line of the high command at that time, caused immense harm to both the state as well as the party. They themselves admit this today. It is an open secret that Sonia Gandhi, forgetting that Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy powered the Congress to victory in the state in 2004 and 2009 and also helped the party head the coalition at the Centre, colluded with Chandrababu Naidu to implicate YS Jagan in fake cases.

However, YS Jagan chose to fight the battle alone rather than compromise or strike a deal. He stood tall though the YSRCP lost the 2014 elections by a whisker. The YSRCP stayed amidst the masses though Chandrababu tried to lure party MLAs into the TDP fold.

YS Jagan has taken firm people-friendly steps in the first week itself. He issued orders giving general consent to the CBI. In contrast, what did Chandrababu do? It is widely believed that he was resourceful in 'managing' some officials and ensure that he was not implicated in cases. The TDP chief, unlike YS Jagan, did not have the courage to face an inquiry. Chandrababu remained in a state of panic and turmoil from the time that he ended the TDP's alliance with the BJP. He appealed to the people of the state to stand by him and protect him since he was being targeted by Prime Minister Modi, he claimed.

Chandrababu later took the rather strange decision of denying entry to the CBI in the state and issued orders to this effect. In doing so, he tried to ward off the challenge of inquiry by the Central agency into allegations of corruption and misuse of funds against him and other TDP leaders. Political observers point out that unless there is a nagging sense of guilt, no government would issue such orders. None other than Prime Minister Modi himself had pointed a finger at Chandrababu with respect to Polavaram and Amaravati alleging massive corruption.

It must be admitted that in allowing the CBI to conduct investigations in AP freely, YS Jagan has sent a clear message that all are equal in the eyes of the law and that the YSRCP would provide transparent welfare governance.
