GHMC To Set Up Website To Promote Clay Ganesh Idols

Hyderabad: In a move to promote eco-friendly clay Ganesh in view of environmental issues, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is in process of setting up a website which will provide details of clay manufacturers facilitating easy process for the buyers in reaching out at the vendors.

The government has taken the initiative on lines of the successful ‘Haritha Haram’ portal in which it had listed out details of nurseries. The civic body officials said that city’s idol makers together have an inventory of about 16,000 clay idols.

“People of the city are now quite environment-conscious but we have noticed that many are finding it difficult to locate vendors who sell clay idols. We hope to solve this problem with the new website,” said B Janardhan Reddy, GHMC Commissioner.

Meanwhile, some opine that the idea may not be hit right away stressing that majority of them still want the idols to be colourful

In order to reach through the public, GHMC has collaborated with Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV), an organization promoting scientific temper. To highlight the need for sustainable development JVV held a 3-km marathon from Osmania University to Sundariya Vignan Kendra on Saturday.

Environmentalist K Purushotham Reddy said that one should celebrate festival in a way that doesn’t harm the environment.

Meanwhile, some opine that the idea may not be hit right away stressing that majority of them still want the idols to be colourful. Similarly, people looking to buy large idols will only buy idols made of plaster of paris as idols with clay can only go up to eight feet.
