Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a 27-year-old comatose patient’ eye was allegedly nibbled by rats at the government-run Bal Thackeray Trauma Care Hospital here. The patient identified as Parminder Gupta was admitted to the hospital after he met with an accident while driving his two-wheeler. During the CT and MRI scan, he was discovered of having a blood clot. Following, this he was surgically operated and since then he was in comatose condition.

The patient’s sister Nirmala said, “The doctors operated upon him to remove the clot. But he has remained in a comatose condition since the surgery on March 8.” As the bill ran up to over Rs 6 lakh after nearly 40 days in the hospital, the family of the victim decided to shift him to the BMC-run hospital. A leading daily told that, “Nirmala claimed that the rat bit him on Sunday when he was shifted to the general ward on the ninth floor from the ICU.”

“Rat infestation is a problem in the hospital but no such incident took place. We checked the patient but didn’t find any bite marks. An ophthalmologist too checked for injuries in the eye but nothing was visible,” said the hospital Medical superintendent Dr HS Bawa.
