The Geminids are actually rocky celestial leftovers. Every December, Earth passes through this stream of debris from 3200 Phaethon - once believed to be an asteroid and now considered an extinct, or iceless, comet.

Sky-watchers can rejoice - one of the finest meteor showers in New Zealand's skies is about to peak on Thursday night.

Calling all sky watchers and delusional romantics, Geminids can be seen tonight and sometimes up to 12 per hour. Annnndddd, Jupiter should be very close to the crescent moon.
