Hyderabad: The conjoined twins Veena and Vani’s surgery has been hanging fire as the state government has not taken decision whether to go ahead with the surgery or not.

Meanwhile, a silver lining has cropped up with three US experts showing interest to examine the option of the surgery.

Ben Carson, ex-director of paediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland has shown interest to examine the conjoined twins and operate surgery. Pastor Emmaneul Nakka representing the Adventist Church Media Centre based in Pune said that Carson would be visiting in September to attend series of events and if things fall in place with the Telangana government, he will make a visit to Hyderabad.

Doctor Ben Carson is known a known face among the medical fraternity, who along with his extensive team separated 11-month-old conjoined twins - Joseph Banda and Luka Banda. The operation lasted for 22-hours which was done in 1997.

On the other hand, two other doctors -Dr Goodrich and Dr Staffenberg- have also come forward to take up the case of conjoined twins.

Mujtaba Hasan Askari, president of city based NGO -Helping Hand Foundation- said that the two US doctors are in touch with the NRI doctors based in New York and expressed that they will coordinate with Carson in taking up conjoined twins case.

On July 9 state Health Minister C Laxma Reddy said that the government has offered to facilitate the surgery if the doctors come forward to perform the operation. “If doctors come forward to perform surgery, the government is ready to spend money and facilitate,” said Laxma Reddy.

Doctors from London, who examined the twins earlier, expressed readiness to perform the surgery, but they could not give 100 percent guarantee to the life of the twins, he said. A team from AIIMS has also expressed the same opinion after conducting all the tests, he said.

Born in 2003 with their heads conjoined, Veena and Vani continue to stay in the Niloufer hospital.
