Nitish Kumar on Wednesday resigned as Bihar Chief Minister in the wake of his standoff with Maha Gathbandhan ally Rashtriya Janata Dal of Lalu Prasad Yadav. Nitish Kumar met Governor Kesari Nath Tripathi at Raj Bhawan on Wednesday evening and submitted the resignation of his government. The resignation came barely hours after Lalu Prasad Yadav ruled out the resignation of his son and deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav over a corruption scam.

Ever since, Lalu, Rabri and Tejashwi were booked by the CBI in a corruption case of 2005 vintage, there were chinks in the Maha Gath Bandhan. while Nitish wanted Tejashwi's resignation, Lalu camp was adamant.

After putting in his papers, Nitish said: In the circumstances obtaining in Bihar, it became difficult to run the grand alliance government. Lalu on his party said: The BJP is trying to destabilise governments in non-BJP states. The Mahagathbandhan is strong and will continue to be so.
