Telangana Is Pretty Much A One Horse Race: Survey

Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao - Sakshi Post

For months now, it was widely being speculated that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), would comfortably romp home in the next round of elections.

The latest India Today-Axis my India survey appears to suggest that electoral fight in Telangana is pretty much a one-horse race. 43% of the respondents favoured the ruling party, while Congress stood in the second place at 18% well below 50% of the TRS vote share. The BJP in fact, edged closer to the Congress at 15%.

While the results of this survey may come as a bit of shock to the Congress which has been hoping to do well in the elections this time, they serve as a shot in the arm for KCR-led TRS. If the vote share in the survey of 43% translates into reality in the upcoming polls, this would suggest an increase of 9% which is significant by all standards. It also means that the TRS could have around 65 seats in the 119 seat assembly. In contrast, it would mean that the Congress vote share would have dropped by 8% from 26 to 18%. This downward slide bores ill for a party which is already racked by dissention and groupism.

In the 2014 elections, it may be recalled that the Congress managed to win 21 seats, a tally it hopes to improve upon in the upcoming elections. KCR seemed to score well at a personal level as well and was the preferred choice across all segments of society, including farmers, minorities and others, it appears.
