Ragging: Karnataka Women’s Commission Takes Up Student’s Suicide Case

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Women's Commission took suo moto cognisance of the suicide of engineering student Meghana, in Bengaluru on February 6.

The Commission took up the case after two videos surfaced that showed Meghana was harassed in the college premises by her fellow students. The videos showed her classmates showering abuses at her, taunting and attempting to attack her. After the videos have gone viral on the social media, police seized the mobile phones of some of the college students and found shocking details of ragging. The videos contradict officials of Dayanand Sagar College, who denied the allegations of ragging in the college premises.

Meanwhile, Meghana's parents said that the videos support their claims that she committed suicide owing to ragging and isolation by her classmates. It may be recalled that on Tuesday 18-year-old engineering student, Meghana, committed suicide by hanging at her house in Channasandra in Rajarajeshwarinagar. She did not leave any suicide note. However, her family alleged that she went into depression following lose in a college elections and subsequent ragging and boycott by her classmates.
