Coins Worth Rs 11 Crore Missing From SBI

Coins worth more than Rs. 11 crore went missing from the State Bank Of India branch in Karauli's Mehandipur Balaji last year. The CBI officials carried out searches over 25 locations in Delhi, Jaipur, Dausa, Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, Alwar, Udaipur, and Bhilwara at the premises of around 15 former bank officials and others.

The incident came to light after the SBI branch decided to carry out the counting of money after a preliminary inquiry indicated a discrepancy in its cash reserve in August 2021. The matter of more than Rs. 11 crores worth of coins missing from the branch was revealed by the private vendor who has taken over the counting of coins.

An FIR was filed on August 16, 2021, at Todabhim Police Station In Karauli after the misappropriation of the coins took place in mid-2021. After the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the embezzlement was committed. As a result, SBI handed over the counting of the coins to an agency Arpit Goods Carrier which revealed that some armed man threatened its staff involved in the counting to stop the activity. The agency started counting the coins on July 22, 2021, under the watch of branch manager Hargovind Meena.

As per the FIR, the agency counted coins valued at Rs. 1.39 crore in 2350 bags as of August 6, 2021 and more than 600 bags were left. The FIR was lodged under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant or by banker, merchant or agent, etc.) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.
