54 Injured in Explosion at Indonesian School Mosque During Friday Prayers

At least 54 people, most of them students, were injured after multiple explosions ripped through a mosque inside a Jakarta high school during Friday prayers, triggering chaos and panic across the campus.

The incident took place at SMA 27, a state-run high school located within a naval compound in the Kelapa Gading area of northern Jakarta. According to eyewitnesses, two loud blasts were heard shortly after the Friday sermon began, followed by clouds of gray smoke filling the prayer hall. Frightened students and staff rushed out of the mosque as glass shattered and debris scattered across the floor.

Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri said that the explosions appeared to have originated near the mosque’s loudspeaker system. Most victims sustained minor to moderate injuries caused by glass fragments, while three students remain in serious condition and are under treatment.

Emergency services and an anti-bomb squad were immediately deployed to the site. During their search, authorities discovered toy rifles and a toy gun near the blast area, adding a layer of confusion to the ongoing probe.

“The cause of the explosions is still under investigation,” Suheri stated, emphasizing that it was too early to draw conclusions about the nature of the incident. “We urge the public not to speculate. Let the investigation run its course, and we will share the findings once confirmed.”

The injured students were taken to nearby hospitals, and several have since been discharged after receiving first aid. Police have cordoned off the area as forensic teams collect evidence to determine whether the explosions were accidental, mechanical, or deliberate.

The unusual incident has sparked concern among parents and school authorities, while security has been heightened in and around the compound as a precautionary measure.
