New Delhi: Responding to union commerce minister Piyush Goyal's remarks on Nobel laureaute Abhijit Banerjee saying 'people rejected his thinking', Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday tweeted that "these bigots are blinded by hatred".

"Dear Mr Banerjee, These bigots are blinded by hatred and have no idea what a professional is. You cannot explain it to them, even if you tried for a decade," Gandhi said in a tweet tagging the media report on Banerjee's response to Goyal's comments on him.

"Please be certain that millions of Indians are proud of your work," the former Congress president said.

Goyal on Friday had said that Banerjee's suggestion of a minimum income scheme was rejected by Indian voters and there was no need to "accept what he thinks".

"Abhijit Banerjee won the Nobel Prize, I congratulate him. But you all know what his understanding is. His thinking is totally left-leaning. He had praised the NYAY scheme effusively, but the people of India rejected his thinking," Goyal was quoted saying.

Banerjee defended himself in an interview to a news channel a day later and said, "I am not partisan in my economic thinking."
