TMC Sends Defamation Notice To Prime Minister Modi

Abhishek Banerjee - Sakshi Post

New Delhi: Even after the curtains are drawn on the election campaigning, the rancour between TMC and the BJP is showing no signs of abatement. Upping the ante, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and MP Abhishek Banerjee sent defamation notice to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly making derogatory remarks against him.

Abhishek Banerjee who is seeking re-election from Diamond Harbour constituency sought an unconditional apology from Modi. Failing which, he threatened to “initiate appropriate proceedings”. The defamation notice is in response to Modi’s recent remarks made when he addressed a rally in the constituency in support of BJP’s Nilanjan Roy.

Describing the TMC government in West Bengal as “bua-bhatija rule” (aunt-nephew rule), Modi alleged that Bengal was going through a torturous period and people would shun TMC and rally behind BJP in the upcoming elections.

"Democracy has turned into goondacracy in West Bengal. Trinamool Congress goons have made life hell for the people here. But the days of goondacracy are over," he had said.

In his notice Banerjee said Modi’s speech was made deliberately to harm his reputation. "Your speech, punctuated by false, malicious and defamatory content, was an embodiment of political calculation and mischievous intent. Your imputations were deliberate and mala fide, perpetrated through thinly veiled references of bhatija (nephew) and didi while being fully aware that Mamata Banerjee is referred to as didi and my client is her only nephew," the notice read.

The particular speech of Modi was made a day after clashes broke out between TMC and BJP workers during BJP president Amit Shah’s rally in Kolkata in which Bengal icon Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar’s bust was vandalised. Tensions ran high both TMC and BJP traded barbs and breathed fire on each other. The Election Commission had to pull the plug on campaigning by shortening it by a day before it was supposed to end.
