Anantapur: Rayalaseema has been reeling under severe drought conditions this kharif season, and the groundnut crop is going to be badly hit due to scanty rainfall for the second consecutive year.

The average has fallen down to 35% this year in the Rayalaseema area. The irony is that there was a prediction of early onset of monsoon this year.

As the kharif season has seen insufficient rains, this has led to lower yields in the agricultural front. Other allied activities dependent tend to get seriously impacted, as well.

Groundnut was sown in 5.43 lakh hectares, as against the normal 7.41 lakh hectares, and this season, a third was cultivated in Anantapur district of the usual area .

State authorities have been slow to act. They seem to have woken up by declaring all the 63 mandals of Anantapur as drought-hit areas. As per officials of the Agriculture department, alternative crops have also been sown in the districts of Kadapa and Anantapur.

Four districts of the region are facing a drought with Kadapa and Anantapur suffering the most. Kadapa is facing a deficiency of 61% in the month of August, followed by Kurnool with 41% and then by Anantapur with 40.8%.

The regular amount of rainfall received in the area is 433.5 mm, but has dropped to 256.7 mm till October-end. The deficit of rains has gone up to 72 per cent in July and 61 per cent in August.

With low yields this year, the trade dependent on the agriculture output is in a crisis. Mainly, the oil mills which are dependent on groundnut crop are facing major losses, due to the unavailability of local crop they are getting from the neighboring states escalating the input prices.
