15-Year-Old Escapes Marriage By Calling Child Helpline

Hyderabad: A 15-year-old girl managed to rescue herself from getting married in Yadadri on Wednesday. As per the details, the teenager, studying in a school at Bowenpally, visited her hometown in Siddipet where she learned of her arranged marriage with a man in Yadadri.

At 6.30 am on Wednesday hours before the wedding, the girl called up child rights organization, Balala Hakkula Sanghamand informed them of her situation and sought help.

Within a few hours, Yadadri district officials on the directions of the District Collector came to her rescue and averted the child marriage. The girl was all set to join Class X in a week's time when her parents sprung the marriage upon her. Despite her numerous pleas to return to school, the girl was brought Chandepalli village in Yadadri, where the parents planned to get her married to a 26-year-old man.

According to the Child Rights Organisation, the girl's parents agreed to get their daughter married to the man, as he was of a higher caste and also willing to bear the cost of the wedding apart from offering them money.

The preliminary investigations revealed that the man was jobless. The girl was produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) after her rescue and sent to the Bal Sadanam in Nalgonda district. On the other hand, the girl's family were counseled and made to sign a resolution mentioning that they won't marry their daughter until she reaches the legal age.
