Bharat Biotech: COVAXIN Booster Neutralises Both Omicron, Delta Variants

Bharat Biotech on Wednesday said that COVAXIN has a neutralizing effect on the Omicron and Delta variants of COVID-19. A study conducted at an Emory University study showed that those who have taken the booster dose Covaxin, six months after two doses can neutralize the coronavirus’s Omicron and Delta variants. Covaxin booster shot has led to the development of strong antibodies against Delta and Omicron.

Bharat Biotech said that the Delta variant was neutralized in 100% of test serum samples and the Omicron variant was neutralized in over 90% of serum samples. 

Krishna Ella, chairman, and MD, Bharat Biotech, said the positive neutralization responses against the Omicron and Delta variants validated the hypothesis of the vaccine generating both humoral and cell mediated immune responses.

He said, "We are in a continuous state of innovation and product development for Covaxin. The positive neutralization responses against the Omicron and Delta variants validate our hypothesis of a multi-epitope vaccine generating both humoral and cell-mediated immune responses."

"The global impact of Omicron shows us that the fight against Covid-19 continues, and we’re encouraged that these data demonstrate the value of Covaxin as a primary and booster vaccine," Shankar Musunuri, chairman, CEO and co-founder of Ocugen said. In the US and Canada, Ocugen is co-developing a Covaxin vaccine candidate with Bharat Biotech for Covid-19.
