Sushma Swaraj, A Messiah For Stranded NRIs

Hyderabad: BJP leader and former external affairs minister in the Modi 1.0 government, Sushma Swaraj passed away on Tuesday night after a massive cardiac arrest. She will be cremated with full state honours at the Lodhi Road crematorium today.

Swaraj can perhaps be called as the most 'millennial' minister the Indian government have had. The former EAM struck a chord with all with her round-the-clock activeness of social media platforms more so on micro-blogging site Twitter.

She won hearts and can be truly considered a messiah of Indians stranded abroad. One Twitter distress call and Swaraj would quickly connect to different embassies of countries to help Indians and felicitating the process of evacuating them.

Let's recall a few such instances where the MEA played an active role. In 2015, a Yemeni woman married to an India tweeted an image of her eight-month-old baby and made a plea for evacuation. The MEA was quick to respond and India's humanitarian aid got applause globally.

In February 2015, the MEA helped 168 Indians trapped in Basra, Iran. Swaraj had acted on a video that was shared with her on social media.

In 2016, she helped out an Indian man to rescue his brother who was stuck at the Doha airport. Swaraj also helped a man whose wedding was a few days away and was stuck in the USA without a passport in 2018.

These are just handpicked among the many instances where Sushma Swaraj led MEA acted like the Good Samaritan for stranded Indians abroad. Not just that, such was her exuberance, she was tagged 'super mom' of India by Washington Post, and many Indians resonated the same sentiment with the active minister.

On her demise, Swaraj’s successor in Modi 2.0 government S. Jaishankar wrote, "The whole nation grieves, the Foreign Ministry even more so."

Another twitter user wrote, "I live in Oman and I am deeply shocked and literally crying in tears, I have seen her twice face to face, I just want to tell her, sorry mam I couldn’t tell you but you were one of the best Minister India could ever have. You were a great foreign minister.

She is survived by her husband Swaraj Kaushal and daughter Bansuri.
