Ashada Jatara, popularly known as Bonalu, is an annual Hindu festival that is mainly celebrated in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Goddess Mahakali is worshipped during the festival time.

The festival is celebrated in the month of Ashada Masam (July/August). On the first day and last day, pujas are performed for Yellamma.

Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao greeted the people on the occasion of commencing of the festival on Sunday.

State government has already declared the festival as a state function.

During this festival time, the people involve in complete spiritual activities.

The festival commences with a function at Golconda Fort on Sunday.

On the occasion of festival, women prepare rice cooked with milk and jiggery in a new brass or an earthen pot. The meaning of Bonam is meals.

The longstanding demand of the people of Telangana for declaring the festival as a state one has been fulfilled by state government recently.

The festival is celebrated at about 115 temples  including Ujjaini Mahankali Temple and others across Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
