The reservation quota exceeds 50 per cent in the local body elections, which is unconstitutional, the petition said.

During the High Court hearing on Monday, Vedula Srinivas, Advocate to the petitioner, said the Backward Classes were being given a 34 per cent reservation, while the SCs and STs were allotted reservations in proportion with their population. In some places, the SCs and STs are allotted 100 per cent reservation, which makes it more than 50% of reservations in the local body elections, he added.
