Man Attempts Suicide After Being Caught By Police For Torturing Wife

Hyderabad: A 22-year-old man who was arrested on Thursday for assaulting his wife for dowry attempted suicide by jumping in front of an RTC bus to escape jail.

According to the police, the accused Christopher hailing from Tandur fell in love with G. Sumalatha, who is studying nursing at a private college in Saroor Nagar. Christopher, who works at a lodge in Nampally eloped the girl on August 1 and married her. They both started living at ECIL in a rented room.

Suspecting that she had a relation in the past, Christopher started harassing her. He attacked her with a stone and severely injured her face. He also demanded dowry. Fed up with the harassment, Sumalatha went to her parents’ home and lodged a complaint with the police against her husband.

However, Christopher told the police that the girl's father is trying to separate them and he requested them to unite him with his wife.

When the police arrested him, the accused tried to commit suicide by running in front of an RTC bus to escape from being sent to jail. He sustained minor injuries on his leg. He was then shifted to a hospital.

The police said that he will be produced before the court after treatment.
