Water problem intensifies in Tirumala

Accute water shortage is crippling Tirumala, the abode of Lord Venkateswara, in Chittoor district.

Delay in the arrival of monsoon and borewell running dry are the reasons for the water crisis in the temple town.

About 70,000 devotees visit the temple every day and 40 lakh gallons of water is needed to cater their needs.

Water levels have dropped in Papanasanam, Gogarbham, Kumara Dhara, Pasupu Dhara and Akasha Ganga and the officials are in a dilemma over arranging the water to the devotees on the hill.

As per the official figures, The present water level in Papanasanam is 412 lakh gallons of water, 55 lakh gallons in Gogarbham, 1055 lakh gallons in Kumara Dhara dam. Thus the total amount of water that is available now for Tirumala devotees in 1574 lakh galloons of water.

If there is no rainfall, the available water now is sufficient only for a period of another 48 days.
