Rohith not a Dalit: TS Police Report

Hyderabad: The tragic death of the Hyderabad Central University PhD scholar Vemula Rohith has taken a controversial turn. The Telangana police stated in a report that he is not a Dalit and have sighted the Tehsildar’s report to substantiate this. Details from this report were quoted on Friday by the union minister Smriti Irani, in her Lok Sabha speech.

Meanwhile the Rajya Sabha saw stormy discussions on the death of Rohith Vemula. Sitaram Yechury, the national secretary of CPM, objected to Smriti Irani’s speech and squarely blamed the Centre’s attitude for the Rohith’s suicide. BSP chief Mayawati questioned the veracity of the committee constituted to investigate the death of Rohith Vemula and wanted to know why there were no Dalits in the committee.
