A large number of united-Andhra supporters gathered outside the residence of Congress President Botsa Satyanaryana at Vizinagaram near on Friday against the move to divide the state, prompting police to resort to mild cane charge and tear gas shells to disperse them.

The protesters, including students and state government employees, reached the residence of Satyanarayana and tried to go inside, police said. This forced the police to use mild cane charge to disperse the agitators, they added.
The angry protesters pelted stones at the police, who lobbed tear gas shells at them. The agitators damaged police vehicles in protest against the lathicharge. A tense atmosphere prevailed in entire Vizianagaram town as a 48-hour bandh in protest against the Union Cabinet's decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh began this morning. Earlier, the students and employees damaged the Satya Degree College belonging to PCC President and damaged glass panes and furniture there.
