Call of duty comes first for this dying driver in Guntur - Sakshi Post

Braving a severe heart attack while at the wheel, a 44-year-old driver of a government bus managed to stop the vehicle just in time, saving the lives of 56 passengers, before succumbing to the attack at Sattenapalli of Rajupalem mandal in Guntur district on Thursday.

Shaik Dastagiri, driver with APSRTC, was plying his bus from Pidugurallu to Guntur at around 11.30 am, when the incident took place. The bus left the Pidgurallu depot at 11 am, half and hour into the journey, Dastagiri  experienced shooting pain in the left side of his body. Initially he ignored the pain, thinking it to be a minor chest pain. But soon, the pain started getting unbearable. He told a passenger sitting next to him about his discomfiture, the latter advised him to ride for at least 10 kms, as there were no doctors in the vicinity.

He added that there was a medical practitioner, ten kms from the spot they were in.

Dastagiri tried to put up a brave front and tried continuing with his journey, but soon the pain became unbearable and it became clear to him that he was having a heart attack.  The alert bus driver quickly swerved his bus to the left, and stopped it, before collapsing on steering.

The passengers tried to shift him onto a seat and tried resuscitating him, but he was dead by then. They called 108 as well, but to no avail.

The bravery of the driver moved many a passenger to tears.
